Class 1 – Gardener of the Year

The entry  will comprise one vase of 3 flowers and a selection of four items from classes 2 – 30. The flowers may be of any cultivar; the display is to be staged on a tray or black cloth not larger than 450 mm wide x 600 mm deep. Entry Fee £1, Prizes: 1st £10, 2nd £5

Exhibition Vegetables:
The following 5 classes are for gardeners who specialise in specimen vegetables

  • 31. Three Carrots, 300mm or longer
  • 32. Six Runner Beans
  • 33. Five onions (round), 225g or over
  • 34. Three Parsnips, 300mm or longer Tops trimmed to a max.75mm
  • 35. Three Blanched Leeks, 350mm or longer between button & vee

Fruit:

  • 41. A plate of Soft Fruit
  • 42. Five Cooking Apples
  • 43. Five Dessert Apples
  • 44. Five Pears
  • 45. Five Plums
  • 46. Five of any other Fruit (not soft)

Flowers:

  • 51. Three Dahlias of the same cultivar
  • 53. Three Roses any cultivar
  • 54. Three Stems of Rudbeckia
  • 62. A Specimen Bloom (any kind)
  • 63. Six Sweet Peas
  • 64. Vase of not more than six stems of flowers not in classes 51-63
  • 65. A Flowering Pot Plant
  • 66. A Foliage Pot Plant
  • 67. One or more Cactus or Succulent in Pot(s) in an area no larger than 300mm square

Junior: Under 7 years

  • 82. Cress grown in an eggshell
  • 83. Funniest shape fruit or vegetable (need not have been
    home grown)

Junior: 7 – 11 years

  • 85. Funniest shape fruit or vegetable (need not have been
    home-grown)
  • 86. Cress grown in a decorated shell

Junior: 12 – 16 years

  • 92. Any home-grown vegetable
  • 93. A Miniature Garden in a seed tray (max. 250 mm x 400 mm)

Exhibiting Advice

  • All items within an entry should be of the same size, shape and colour.
  • All flowers, fruit and vegetables must be grown by the exhibitor except where stated.
  • All vegetables should be clean. Display onions with roots trimmed and tops tied with raffia or twine on a bed of fine sand.
  • Root vegetables such as carrots and beetroot should have the foliage trimmed to 50 – 75 mm.
  • Fruit should be exhibited with stalk or calyces attached on a plate.
  • Display vases will be provided on the morning of Show Day for staging cut blooms.
  • Black cloths can be provided for Class 1, if required.
  • All pot plants to be in pots no larger than 180 mm diameter.
  • Entries in Classes 65 – 70 must have been in the exhibitor’s possession for not less than two months before Show Day.
